The Moon Festival is being celebrated at Golden Square Centre on Sept. 10.
Volunteers within the Chinese community have planned a grand celebration at 1177 Central Pkwy W. between 7 and 10 p.m. to celebrate the popular Asian festival, which is also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival and Lantern Festival to the Chinese and Vietnamese community.
It features multicultural performances, karaoke with prizes, face painting and a lucky draw. Traditional moon cakes and lanterns will also be handed out for free.
Victor Oh, who heads the group of volunteers organizing the event, says the Moon Festival is like Thanksgiving celebrated by western cultures.
It celebrates the autumnal equinox of the solar calendar when the moon is at its fullest and roundest. Traditionally, families and friends gather to admire the bright mid-autumn harvest moon while lighting up paper lanterns and eating mooncakes.
Oh says he hopes that the whole community will gather to share in the celebration.
"We want to invite other groups so they can get involved, bring their children, and get to know this beautiful tradition," he said.
